The Lighthouse Leadership Fund is a separate, application-based pro bono program — distinct from C4CL's paid coaching and team development services. LLF funding is limited and awarded at C4CL's discretion to qualifying organizations.

LEADERSHIP COACHING for the nonprofit community
What is the LLF?

Pro bono coaching for organizations doing the hardest work

The Lighthouse Leadership Fund is C4CL's pro bono initiative — created to extend the reach of leadership coaching to nonprofit organizations for whom the investment in paid services would be a meaningful barrier, or whose work and current circumstances represent a compelling case for dedicated support.

LLF provides the same high-caliber, ICF-credentialed coaching that C4CL offers through its paid programs — culturally attuned, equity-focused, and tailored to the realities of nonprofit leadership — at no cost to qualifying organizations.

The fund reflects our belief that the leaders most critical to community wellbeing are often the ones with the least access to the development tools they need. The Lighthouse Leadership Fund exists to change that.

Understanding the difference

Leadership coaching is not what many people assume

We hear it often: nonprofit leaders assume "coaching" means management consulting, strategic planning, or external advising. It is none of those things. Understanding this distinction matters — coaching only works when a participant genuinely wants it and understands what it is.

Coaching IS

A structured thinking partnership

Your coach helps you clarify your own thinking, identify patterns, set goals, and develop your capacity as a leader — through skilled questions and a confidential, non-judgmental space. The insight and direction comes from you.

Coaching IS

An inside-out process

Coaching builds the mindset, self-awareness, resilience, and strategic thinking that make leaders effective — even as the circumstances around them change. It is development, not advice.

Coaching is NOT

Consulting, mentoring, or therapy

Coaches do not diagnose problems, prescribe solutions, or provide organizational strategy. They do not tell you what to do or substitute for therapeutic support. If you need those things, we can help you find them — but they are separate from coaching.

What the LLF provides

Two pathways. One commitment to your leadership.

Individual

1-on-1 Leadership Coaching

Coaching is delivered virtually and scheduled at a cadence that works for the participant. All session content is strictly confidential.

What's included 6 one-hour coaching sessions · Up to 12 months to use · Coaching Readiness Intake · Mid-engagement and post-engagement feedback check-in · Coach matched to participant's context and goals

Organizations may apply for individual coaching, team development, or both — subject to eligibility and availability.

Why women & girls

We prioritize organizations serving women and girls — because the data demands it

Organizations whose primary mission serves women and/or girls receive weighted priority consideration in the LLF review process. This is not incidental — it reflects a significant, documented gap in philanthropic investment.

Leadership development is a force multiplier: when the leaders of women- and girls-serving organizations are stronger, the communities they serve are stronger. C4CL's LLF is one small but intentional contribution to closing that gap.

Serving women and girls as your primary population does not guarantee approval — but it is a meaningful factor in our review when other criteria are comparable.

0.5%
of all philanthropic funding goes specifically to women and girls of color — despite representing 1 in 5 people in the U.S.

Eligibility

Two pathways to qualify

The LLF uses a two-track eligibility framework. You must meet all criteria within one track. If you are unsure, apply and our team will make the determination.

Track 1

Emerging Organization

  • In operation for fewer than 10 years
  • Annual revenue under $1M (most recent fiscal year)
  • Actively delivering on your mission — not in wind-down

For organizations in early stages where leadership development investment has the highest long-term leverage.

Track 2

Resilience & Adaptation

  • Experienced significant funding disruption — loss of 20% or more of revenue year-over-year, or loss of a single funding stream representing 15% or more of operating budget
  • Still actively operating and delivering on your mission
  • Navigating meaningful operational or strategic change — restructuring, new revenue strategy, leadership transition, or a fundamentally different operating reality than two years ago

Designed for organizations that have weathered serious disruption, found a way through, and whose leaders need the space and support to recalibrate and lead differently. Revenue above $1M does not disqualify under this track.

✦ Priority consideration is given to organizations serving women and/or girls as their primary mission population under both tracks. This factor carries meaningful weight when other criteria are comparable between applicants, and can be a deciding factor in borderline cases.
How it works

From application to coaching

Apply

Submit your organization's application, including your most recent Form 990. Applications are reviewed within 10 business days.

Eligibility review

C4CL reviews your application against track criteria. We may follow up with questions. You will receive a written decision.

Participant intake

If approved, nominated participants complete C4CL's Coaching Readiness Questionnaire and a 30–60 minute individual intake conversation.

Coaching begins

Approved participants are matched with a C4CL coach. Sessions are scheduled directly between participant and coach at a mutually workable cadence.

What we ask in return

Partnership, not payment

Because services are provided at no cost, we ask for something else in return: your voice, your story, and your help in extending C4CL's reach to other organizations that could benefit.

From the organization

  • Promote C4CL and the LLF through your own channels at least once during and once after the engagement
  • Participate in at least one joint promotion or co-branded activity with C4CL
  • Grant C4CL permission to use your organization's name and logo in our materials
  • Provide a written testimonial upon completion of the engagement
  • Permit C4CL to reference the partnership in grant applications, impact reports, and donor communications

From participants

  • Show up — attend all sessions or provide 24 hours' advance notice of any changes
  • Complete the mid-engagement and post-engagement feedback surveys
  • Respond to communications from C4CL or your coach within 5 business days
  • Participate voluntarily — coaching only works when you genuinely want it
  • Grant C4CL permission to use your testimonial and, if comfortable, your name and image in marketing materials
Engagement is a requirement, not a suggestion. Because LLF resources are limited, C4CL reserves the right to suspend or reallocate coaching services to participants who are not actively engaging. A full engagement policy is included in the pro bono agreement signed prior to coaching.

Ready to apply?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Availability is limited — we encourage eligible organizations to apply as soon as they are ready.
